On today’s EFD Explained, we’re investigating the Bundesliga tax. The rocky starts to Premier League life for stars like Sancho, Havertz, Werner, and Pulisic have prompted some football fans to question the quality of the German top flight, and ask whether big-money signings from the division are ever a wise idea – and with clubs competing to sign Erling Haaland this summer, the BuLi’s reputation could drastically affect its clubs’ ability to make cash. But is the tax real? Why have stars like Gundogan and Heung-Min Son succeeded in the Prem, while Naby Keita and Henrikh Mkhitaryan failed?

6:03 um… I don't think he's Ghanaian… 🤷🏽♀️
No it's not a real thing. We don't hear about the "Prem tax" cause there are only 9 English players in the Bundesliga, 1 in la Liga, 7 in Serie A, and 3 in Ligue 1. To put this into perspective the Prem top 4 have 15 players who came from the Bundesliga alone. In 4 Leagues 20 prem players, in 4 teams 15 Bundesliga players. If this "tax" was real why do so many of England's top teams have/want to buy from the Bundesliga?
Come on, the bundesliga is better than the premier league and with less money
The reason some players don't do well in PL is because they either don't fit in the system the clubs ask them to adapt to or maybe they can't adapt to their new country. All the mentioned players struggled because the clubs that signed them don't actually look as to if they can fit into the system. They just see the stats and assume they'll replicate that form in their team without actually checking what style of play the previous club was playing and so forth. Also you can spin this narrative around and say that some players have gotten better since moving to the PL, so it all just depends on suitability and adaptations.
Style of play in Bundesliga is not similar to PL.In Bundesliga, many teams like to play open game, high pressing and not heavily focus on defensive side. So,it allow attacking players to have the license to play more direct and eventually they can score a lot of goals. In contrast,PL sides tend to focus on possession, defensive aspects and play more aggressive and fast pace mode,so certain number of players came from Bundesliga struggle to replicate their performance in PL because of that matter.Thats why PL is the toughest and competitive league in the world.
A move at all generally sees a drop in output
Pulisic had a few bad injuries, but he actually has contributed well to the club.
Honestly if you look deeper at alot of these players there is more than they just aren't good enough.
And which other player has the pressure of being the main guy for their National team..
His last injury was in MMA style CONCACAF. Looking at players in EPL, thinking quite a few would be injured alot if they had CONCACAF style games. Those are just brutal.
The only tax in world football is the English Tax! Their national team always under performs yet their squad is the most “valuable”.
Gundogan is doing well.
Bundesliga do have exciting football teams, and as much as I admire Bayern Munich I wish the league can become more competitive soon, with a few other winners.
Joelinton has gone from must sell to the first name on the team sheet for Newcastle. For him it is for sure how much of a terrible manager Steve Bruce is! Imagine going from Nagelsmann to Brucey just awful hahaha. Now Eddie Howe is getting the most out of him and hes unreal.
I thought auba was close to 32 goals in his first season?
Hazard's "failure" at Real Madrid is mainly cos of injuries 👍
werner wasn't a good finisher
pulisic career was messed up by injures
sancho is in a highly disfunctional man u side
havertz had covid which affected him alot
joelinton was playing as a lone st while in bl he wasn't
also in the bl they play way faster most teams play attacking football while in pl they had park the bus teams and slow build up
So what your saying is players who perform at the top clubs at the Bundesliga only perform when going to mid table or lower teams…
I think people genuinely forget the good signings from the bundesliga, bobby firmino, aubamayang, gundogan, sane, son and even kdb. What I feel like is the problem is that clubs are signing players for big money, but I feel like the players are not coached well and play in vastly different system than in germany. Pressing is King in Germany, perfect example of this is firmino and how well he fitted into klopp's system. In the EPL it's more about results than playing the game in a very nice style. You can't blame the coaches can you, unlike in the bundesliga or in ligue 1 which are talent beds the premier league is way more based on the goals and assists instead of the underlying numbers and it's also tough sometimes for players to be put under that much pressure. I feel like we sometimes forget as fans that most of the bundesliga players are signed at a very young age and it's tough for them to adjust to new culture and a new language while also having the pressure of performing well, werner has not lost his ability overnight, his composure's just gone to the floor, i think he is one of those players who thrives of confidence, i think if some trust is put on him, like if the coach tells him i am trusting u for the next 10 games prove your worth, I think he might perform instead of constantly rotating him and swapping positions.
Haller eh?
I think ‘useful’ is downplaying just how incredible Joelinton has been in midfield. In pretty much every game he’s played in midfield, he’s been in contention for man of the match. He’s bossed every single game. He might not be worth £40m yet, but he’s arguably been Newcastle’s most important player.
Kinda unfair to say Sancho was looking unfit when he arrived at United I'm pretty sure he was putting up the highest amount of pressures in the United squad when he first arrived
Nothing is worse than English tax, that is the worse. But look at the international to see the difference.
I think a lot comes down to the different style of play, but this style of play is also due to the disparity between teams. For example the last team in the Buli, Fürth, would have absolutely no chance in the PL, I would go as far as to say, they would struggle to finish in the top half of the Championship. Contrary Norwich would probably finish mid-table in the Buli.
What I exactly mean by that, can be seen with Bayern. In the Buli they play with an extremely high line, their dispossessions even get exposed often in the Buli, but most of the other Teams don't have the quality to punish them, so they continue to play like that, because it brings a lot of offensive power. Offensive players also get a lot of confidence form that, which is an underrated factor in player performances.
If they played like that in Prem, they would loose a lot of points against lower placed sides, because they could exploit their errors more often. This would lead Bayern to play more defensively, which on the other hand would lead to less offensive output, which most people would view as a drop-off in quality, while it is just a necessary change of style to be more successful in a stronger league.
These three factors; style of play, quality of opposition and less confidence leads, in my opinion at least, to most of the struggles Buli players have in the Prem.
At this point I also wanna say that nothing beats the eye test if you want to rate a player correctly. Individual stats can really be misleading cause they're influenced by so many little things a player can't influence by himself.
Video summary: yes but we’re gonna be nice about it
Don't see how this is an issue. Defending in German football is very poor compared to Spanish and English football. Players have way more time and space in Bundesliga. Half the teams in German top flight football would be in the championship in England. You need to look how players compete when they're playing the top 3 or 4 teams in Germany because they're the only teams that can play. Look at the CL how many German teams get to the final 16? 1 maybe 2 per year? That says a lot
Most of these claims aren't real
Pulisic and Keita have had injuries and look real Good When they are playing week in week out
Kai and Sancho have started to come Good
Timo Werner can be called a flop but when his Touch in front of goal improves
He'll be a world beater too
