  3. RIP to a wonderful footballer, coach and executive. His example in the past, now and will be in the future is a truly excellent example to all. Love and respect from the UK to all at Bayern Munich and in German football.

  4. I'm a 54 year old man from England. Franz Beckenbauer is the first footballer i knew of. I was 4 years old at the time of the 1974 World Cup. My older brother, who was 10, watched the final from his hospital bed in the East End of London, after having his tonsils removed. As our parents are from the Caribbean there was no football culture at home. We didn't have ready made teams that we supported or players whose names we knew. When my brother came back from hospital all he could talk about was Beckenbauer, the World Cup Final and being given ice cream in bed during the final. After that whenever we'd kick a tennis ball or whatever we had back then around in the back garden it was Beckenbauer this and Beckenbauer that. The other thing i remember was asking my mum and dad if i could have my tonsils removed…because i wanted ice cream in bed. I wasn't old enough to remember him playing but from what i've seen since he could have played at the highest level in any era and would have been one of the first names on the team sheet for any team there's ever been. Hence my definition of a 'World Class Footballer', if you are truly world class there is no debate and where Beckenbauer was concerned there was no debate.
